New Arrivals!!

Just as our foals were moving to their new homes, September witnessed the arrival of three new ponies at Waxwing including two future stallions for our mares. They include:

Moelview Masquerade

Section B yearling colt

Sire: Moelview Prince Charming  Dam Moelview Ciri

16 years after we brought Moelview Mohawk to Waxwing from Dolgellau, we are delighted to add Masquerade to our stud. He is well put together, a brilliant mover and excellent on type; very importantly he has a lovely temperament.

Thistledown Vierra

Section A three-year-old colt

Sire: Waxwing Victory  Dam: Waxwing Valencia

Paul and Margaret Brightwell (Cosford Stud) have kindly loaned us Vierra for next season. He already has some promising foals on the ground and should prove to be a useful outcross for our mares. Striking in colour, he is a quality pony with excellent conformation and a good mover. Again he has a marvellous temperament which is very important in our breeding programme.

Springlane Songbird

Section A three-year-old filly

Sire: Abbeybells Pere Joseph   Dam: Springlane Evensong

Purchased at the Fayre Oaks Sale, Song joins our band of mountain pony mares providing us with an interesting outcross from our own breeding. Her dam, by Pendock Legend, also bred the 2009 Royal Welsh champion, Springlane Pebbles. Song combines good looks and movement with a wonderful temperament so hopefully will breed us some nice lead rein and first ridden ponies.

HOYS 2010 - 8 ‘Waxwings’ qualify in 5 different classes

Having had 9 qualifiers in 2008, 7 qualifiers in 2009, we send our congratulations to all the owners of the 8 Waxwing ponies that have qualified for the Horse of the Year Show in 2010.

It is credit to their wonderful production skills, their talented jockeys and the temperaments of their ponies that, yet again, have done the Stud proud.

Lead Rein (3 qualifiers)

Waxwing Pastille by Fronbach Casino x Cevara Pandrop. Pastille has qualified for HOYS every year for the past five years with three different jockeys. This year she qualified at the Ponies UK Summer Championships where she also stood reserve mini champion. Not only does she excel on the lead but at home she is the perfect partner for her little jockey who happily rides her on her own.

Waxwing Milk Tray by Heniarth Yarra Glen x Cevara Pandrop, the same dam as our other HOYS qualifier W. Pastille. In only her second season, Milk Tray was purchased in May when she was immediately a champion in novice classes before contesting only a few HOYS qualifiers.

Waxwing Milk Tray Waxwing Prattle

In June she took the HOYS qualifier at Royal Norfolk where she also took the mini championship. Later in the season she was third in the Lobster Pot Championship at Ponies UK.

Waxwing Prattle by W. Hurricane x Cevara Praline, the same dam as last year’s SHP LR champion W. Pringle. Only a four year old, Prattle has only been to a few shows where she was always placed including Champion at Rutland County where she qualified for the Royal International, Champion at NPS Area 4A where she qualified for HOYS and Second Reserve Champion at the Ponies UK Summer Championships in the HOYS division.

First Ridden (2 Qualifiers)

Waxwing Thumbs Up  by W. Hurricane x W. Pop Up. Thumbs Up needs little introduction as he has qualified for HOYS every year since he was only four years old and has been a former winner twice as well as Pony Supreme, the first Welsh pony to take this honour. This year he took the championship at Royal Cornwall where he qualified; among his other wins has been the Great Yorkshire as well as heritage Champion at the BSPS Summer Championships.

Waxwing Painter by W. Hurricane x Synod Poplin. A full brother to Paintbox and Paintbrush, Painter is the last of the Poplin sons to qualify for HOYS. Knocking on the door all season with four seconds in HOYS qualifiers, he eventually cracked it when, in terrible weather conditions, he took the mini championship at Ponies UK. This was a memorable day for the stud as in the final championship line up Waxwing ponies stood champion, reserve champion and second reserve champion.

Open Ridden Mountain & Moorland (2 Qualifiers)

Waxwing Prince Hal by Eyarth Beau Geste x Llangeitho Princess Royal. Purchased by his present owners as a foal and leased out for ridden classes, Prince Hal qualified for HOYS in 2009. This year he has enjoyed a wonderful season qualifying early in the season. He won at the Royal International Horse Show at Hickstead and was Heritage Champion at the BSPS Championships.

Waxwing Rheel by Wyken Rob Roy x Persie  Rhapsody. This is the 7th year that Rheel has qualified for HOYS, every year since 2004 – surely a record for any individual pony let alone a stallion. He continues to top the scores for performance in all his classes and is consistently at the top of the line. At the NPS Area show at Hickstead, he took the Open Ridden M&M Championship. He has also qualified for Olympia for the third time; last year he was placed overall third and for the second time judged 'Best of Breed'.

More of our Waxwing ponies have upheld the Stud’s at home and abroad including:

Section A

Waxwing Paintbox (Gelding by W. Hurricane x Synod Poplin)

Former twice HOYS champion, now retired to family in Scotland where he has taken up a new role as lead rein pony. They are having great fun with him; here is part of an email received last week:

“We have had a great time with Paintbox........ he is fabby for Emily to ride on her own, on the main road in the heaviest of traffic and among all our big horses in the school.......she just absolutely loves him and if all he does is pony club and in the future workers then I am more than happy......he is part of the family!  Emily just sits on him bare back in the stable and hugs him for ages.........he is teaching her so much and hopefully will make her a Badminton rider in the future!!!!!”
